Every story needs a world, and sometimes that world feels bigger than words on a page. As I built the setting for my story, I realized I needed something more than notes and my vague sketches, which were honestly terrible because I can not draw! I needed a map.
Why a Map Matters
Maps don’t just show where rivers or mountains are. They give a sense of scale, culture, and possibility. For me, the map became a way to see my world as my characters would, to understand the distances they’d travel, the terrain they’d face, and the way regions connected.
I turned to Fiverr to find an artist who could bring my vision to life. After browsing countless portfolios, I came across Sonja Hutchinson, and immediately knew she was the right choice.
Her work had the exact balance of detail and artistry I wanted, and from the very beginning, she understood not just the geography I had in mind, but also the spirit of the world.
The process was wonderfully collaborative. I shared notes, and bits of lore from my story, and Sonja transformed them into a map that felt alive. Mountains rose, rivers flowed, and entire regions took on character.
Seeing the first draft was like looking into my imagination made real and the final version completely exceeded my expectations. The finished piece is more than just a tool for my writing. It’s a work of art that inspires me every time I look at it. It helps me chart my characters’ journeys, deepen the lore of my world, and even spark new plotlines I hadn’t considered.
Working with an illustrator like Sonja reminded me that storytelling doesn’t have to be a solitary process. Collaboration can breathe new life into your vision and sometimes, the map itself becomes the first adventure.
