Using AI To Bring My Characters To Life

Bringing Characters to Life with AI

One of the most exciting parts of writing is watching characters evolve from an idea in your mind into someone who feels real on the page. But lately, I’ve been exploring how artificial intelligence can add another layer of depth to that process.

AI tools can act like sounding boards for character creation. By providing them with a brief description—a character’s age, backstory, or even just a quirky trait—I can generate a picture of the character.

Words are powerful, but sometimes seeing a face makes a character more tangible. AI-generated art can help me test out different looks. What hairstyle fits? How do their expressions match their personality? Even if the final vision is refined by hand later, these images serve as powerful inspiration.

The key thing to remember is that AI doesn’t replace imagination. It extends it. The spark still comes from me. The vision, the story, the heartbeat of the character. AI now just allows me to bring them to life and makes them more real to me during my writing process, even if I end up changing how they look with an artist later on.

“If you could have a conversation with one of your characters, what would you ask them?”

Below is one of the characters that AI generated for me after I wrote a detailed description of how he should look and what he should be wearing. I was detailed enough that he came out exactly as I had pictured him in my mind.

This is Nicholas Bergeron from my Bergeron Witch Series.
