Writing a story is more than words on a page. It’s a journey of imagination, discipline, and persistence. Every story starts with a spark. Sometimes I get a spark with a character, a world, or even an object. This is how I came up with the Atheneum Key in my book The Covenant of the Veil. I just happened to find an old rusty key in the grass of a field I was walking around in. Inspiration can strike anywhere, so I always capture it as soon as it hits.
From there, I outline the story. I start with a roadmap of events, character arcs, and themes. While I sometimes deviate from it, the structure ensures the story flows naturally. When I write, immersion is key. I focus on entering the world I’ve created and letting the characters guide me. At this stage, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s capturing the essence of the story.
Editing is where the magic happens. I refine dialogue, pacing, and character development, often seeking feedback to see the story from new angles. Over time, I’ve learned that creativity alone isn’t enough. Discipline and patience are essential to bring a story to life.
Every tale is the product of countless choices, late-night brainstorming, and dedication. Sharing this process is my way of inviting readers behind the curtain to see the craft and care that shapes each story.
